Prince Yemisi Shyllon Private Museum, LAGOS STATE

One of the most delightful places I have ever visited is Prince Yemisi Shyllon’s home museum. Prince Shyllon is a very humble man and most probably one of the most prolific private art collectors and benefactors of our time. To me, he is Nigeria’s or maybe even Africa’s Guggenheim. If you have ever been to Freedom Park (Broad Street, Lagos) and enjoyed some of the statutes in the park, then you have been a beneficiary of Prince Shyllon’s generosity as those sculptures were donated to the Park by the Prince. He sponsors art students, artists and historians from all over the world in a bid to encourage the awareness and appreciation of African Art.

These pictures are mostly from his garden and it pales in comparison to the contents of his private museum. Every single space in the building is chock filled with art. He has an entire room dedicated to the works of Pa Bruce Onobrakpeya. His collection includes sketches by Aina Onabolu, Peju Alatise, David Dale, Rom Isichei, Ben Enwonwu, etc. He also has an amazing collection of gelede masks I have ever seen. He even has a priceless Nok terracotta in his collection!

You can read more about his philanthropy here and hear from the man himself here.

Without further ado, I present the Shyllon garden museum!

    1. Hello Sally. Due to privacy reasons (he lives in the home), the Prince doesn’t want his location shared. However send me an email (titiswanderlust@gmail.com) & I can help arrange a visit. I’m so sorry for my late response and thank you for visiting my blog!
